EVERY STUMP HAS A STORY

FROM THE SHENANDOAH MOUNTAINS
TO YOUR HOME

STEP 1: DISCOVERY

All of the logs and roots are found in the Shenandoah Valley. Bob, the artist, finds trees and roots, mostly hardwoods, and brings them up to his workshop.

STEP 2: CLEANING

Unwanted bark, dirt, and debris are removed from the logs and roots.  Some may be kept as part of the finished piece.

STEP 3: SCULPTING

The sculpting of each stump is an exploration. The artist takes advantage of color, pattern, and texture variations as he goes in to each piece of wood.  The shape of each sculpture evolves as the variations are revealed and blended.

STEP 4: FINISHING

Each piece is usually sanded and polished to bring out its rich colors. Polyurethane coats and other finishes ensure the wood  gleams in the light,  offering rustic elegance to any room.

STEP 5: FINDING THE STUMP A HOME

This is where you come in.  Take one home and enjoy the visual and tactile effects that are unique to each sculpture.  Contact us for available pieces.

Note: Although they are cleaned and painted, stained, or sealed, these stumps are from the woods with all that entails. While Stumps and Steel often coats the wood to promote longevity, this all-natural wood will continue to evolve over time. As the wood continues to dry, cracks will occur, adding further character to the piece (They are what they're cracked up to be!)

“ROOTAMENTARY” ART

Before and After

Dead roots are carved to reveal and restore the natural flow of the root system. These sculptures can be used as décor, table centerpieces, or placed in your fireplace with candles.
